MINNEAPOLIS — Two people are dead and at least five others were injured, including three police officers, after a shooting Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 2, 2026, near 15 East Grant Street in downtown Minneapolis, Minneapolis Police Public Information Officer Garrett Parten said, according to WCCO / CBS Minnesota. The suspected shooter is also dead, police told WCCO. CNN, citing officials, reported the same core toll: at least two people dead, three officers among the injured, and the shooter deceased.

That is a harder official picture than the city's first public alert, which said only that Minneapolis police were on a scene with multiple victims, including two officers, and told people to stay away. The later police briefing — and matching local reporting from KSTP — put three officers among the wounded. Names have not been released.

A follow-up from the same city account widened the keep-out zone to 12th Street through Franklin Avenue, and Hennepin Avenue through Third Avenue South — the blocks around Grant Street, the Loring Tower apartments, and the Minneapolis Convention Center.

KSTP, citing an MPD spokesperson, said officers were called to the Loring Tower apartment building near 15 East Grant Street around 4:36 p.m. after a report that someone had been shot. First officers entered about 4:39 p.m., saw multiple victims on the ground, and heard gunfire from the upper levels. As they followed the sound, a haze limited visibility, the station reported, and two officers were shot while another was injured.

Parten told WCCO that officers arrived to find one person shot at a high-rise apartment, entered while following gunshots, and "encountered a haze that significantly limited their visibility" on an upper-level floor. Three officers were injured, he said: one was in surgery Wednesday evening, one was shot in the leg, and another was being evaluated for a non-life-threatening injury. Four other people were taken to a nearby hospital, where one person died, Parten said. KSTP, also citing MPD, said one of the two civilian deaths was at the apartment building and the other at the hospital; two other people with gunshot wounds remained hospitalized.

A city hall source told KSTP one officer was shot in the stomach and was in surgery but considered stable as of 6:45 p.m., and that another officer shot in the leg had non-life-threatening injuries. That stomach-wound and "stable" language is the city hall source's, not the wording WCCO attributed to Parten.

FOX 9, citing city officials, first reported two officers shot along with multiple other victims and titled its live blog that the shooter was down — language the city itself did not post on X. By 7:37 p.m. CDT, the same FOX 9 live desk said three people were dead, including the shooter, and four were injured, including three officers. That injured count is lower than Parten's "at least five others." Treat FOX 9's later tally as the station's running desk count, not a second official ledger.

Hospital-side numbers also do not line up one-for-one with the police briefing. A nearby hospital told The Associated Press that seven patients were brought in, CNN reported. KARE said three of the injured were in surgery with gunshot wounds, according to CNN. A FOX 9 live item attributed a separate count to Hennepin County Medical Center officials: at least one killed and six injured.

Unnamed sources told WCCO the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and had been evicted from the apartment earlier Wednesday. KSTP separately said a source confirmed the suspect died by suicide, that officers had been called to the apartment earlier Wednesday for a disturbance involving the same suspect, and that he was evicted today. In the Parten briefing those outlets published, Minneapolis police did not state a motive or officially confirm eviction or suicide. Those details stay with the unnamed sources.

WCCO's Conor Wight described an extraordinary police response at Nicollet and Grant: armored SWAT vehicles at the intersection, ambulances staged nearby, officers with long guns watching an apartment complex. A crowd nearby thought it saw activity around the eighth floor, WCCO said. Shawn Mosby told the station his daughter was helping a friend move in and that people inside were hearing "banging, shooting" and barricading a door. Witness Abdiwakil Mohamed told WCCO he heard three shots that sounded like a rifle while driving on La Salle Avenue, saw an officer who had been shot in a squad car, and believed the shooter was firing from a high vantage in a nearby building. Those are witness accounts, not the department's official sequence.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said his public safety team was responding and that state officials were on the ground to support local law enforcement, WCCO reported. CNN said Walz later posted that he was grateful to law enforcement working to keep downtown neighbors safe. Mayor Jacob Frey said neighboring police agencies and the Minnesota State Patrol were working closely with MPD, according to CNN. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau was aware of the shooting and would offer "any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities," WCCO reported. St. Paul's ATF field division said special agents responded, WCCO said. KSTP reported ATF agents, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension at the scene. The University of St. Thomas Minneapolis campus issued a shelter-in-place order "out of an abundance of caution," a spokesperson told CNN. Metro Transit canceled a northbound Route 10 trip, KSTP said.

This remains a developing scene. The city has not released victim names, a confirmed official cause of the suspected shooter's death, or a motive. The through-line from MPD, CNN, and KSTP is two civilian dead plus a dead suspected shooter; how the third officer was hurt, and the exact injured tally, still differ by desk.
