Blizzard used the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony to put a hard date on the next numbered Diablo game: Diablo V is in development and targeting Spring 2029, the company said in its official recap. The pitch is blunt — “Sanctuary has fallen. Diablo won.” — and for the first time players will enter a world where the Lord of Terror has already taken the win, with the heroes of the past defeated. Blizzard also announced a new animated series set in the Diablo world in development with Netflix, an Amazon class pack for Diablo IV in the first half of 2027, Season of Hell’s Legacy rolling out Sept. 15 at 9:30 a.m. PT, and the Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection arriving on Nintendo Switch 2 that same day.

More gameplay texture came from the Diablo V: Forging the Next Era panel. PC Gamer’s Tyler Colp reported that the sequel is set roughly 100 years after Diablo IV, after Diablo’s apocalyptic destruction of Sanctuary, and that developers stressed everything remains a work-in-progress and subject to change before the Spring 2029 window. Colp’s panel notes: procedurally generated dungeons and open-world regions that change on return; no towns — a mobile caravan of NPCs instead (including a treasure goblin among your companions); returning demon hunter and monk; a new heavily armored plague knight that spreads disease; more launch classes than prior Diablo games combined; and a loot identity swing back toward Diablo II-style depth — belts, set items, multi-slot inventory pieces, and experiments with items that require certain stat thresholds.

On the live-service side of the franchise, Blizzard framed Season of Hell’s Legacy as a 30-year tribute: Deckard Cain’s lost soul guiding players to redeem dark wanderers, confront Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo, and reclaim soul splinters that grant power at a steep price. More than 130 million players have entered Sanctuary across the franchise, Blizzard said. The Amazon class for Diablo IV preserves the Skovos warrior fantasy across Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger, and Commander archetypes, with bow and javelin — a new weapon type for Diablo IV — and was first shown in Lord of Hatred. The Switch 2 Age of Hatred Collection bundles the base game with Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred.

Blizzard pointed players to Diablo5.Blizzard.com for updates and said regular Diablo V development updates are planned starting next year. Treat the 2029 systems talk as early direction, not a locked ship list — Colp’s WIP caveat is the right frame until Blizzard puts builds in front of players.
