IllFonic Publishing cancelled the PlayStation 5 release of Halloween: The Game in Japan after it could not obtain a domestic CERO rating, the studio said in an Aug. 30 statement on the game’s official X account. Xbox Series X|S and PC versions are still scheduled to launch in Japan on Wednesday, Sept. 9, the statement said.

“Unfortunately, our rating for PlayStation has been cancelled in Japan due to our inability to obtain a domestic rating from CERO (Computer Entertainment Rating Organization) for the title’s visceral violence and nudity,” IllFonic wrote. “We have determined that regulating the content to achieve compliance would significantly compromise the worldview of the original film, and would also prevent us from providing the gameplay experience that players expect.” 4Gamer published the Japanese-language notice Aug. 31 and said platform refunds would apply to existing PS5 pre-orders in the region.

Kotaku and Polygon explained the platform gap: CERO ratings are required for physical releases in Japan, while digital titles can sometimes use IARC ratings instead, but Sony still requires a CERO rating for digital games that IARC would classify 18+. Halloween: The Game’s mature content, IllFonic said, put it in that box. Xbox and PC can ship on IARC without a CERO mark; PS5 in Japan cannot under Sony’s rule as those outlets described it.

Games Press materials from IllFonic earlier listed a Sept. 8, 2026, digital launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Epic) at $39.99 standard / $59.99 Deluxe. The Japan PS5 cancellation does not, on the materials reviewed here, pull the console version from other territories. Kotaku also noted Australia had already refused classification over drug content, a separate regulator decision.

CERO’s refusal, and IllFonic’s refusal to cut the game, are the decision points. Sony’s store policy is the gate. Japanese PS5 buyers lose a SKU; Xbox and PC buyers in Japan keep the Sept. 9 date IllFonic posted.
