NVIDIA's DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering officially debuts Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, at 9 p.m. Pacific Time in NBA 2K27, the company said in a GeForce news post. The launch title — developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K — is the first shipping game to use the tech on all GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPUs, and on GeForce NOW.

Unlike prior DLSS features that mainly reconstruct resolution or invent frames, NVIDIA markets DLSS 5 as a final rendering stage that uses the engine's rendered frame (geometry, textures, lighting buffers, motion vectors) as a fixed foundation, then generates richer lighting and material responses — subsurface scattering on skin, light through hair and foliage, deeper contact shadows — while staying temporally stable and deterministic. It runs as an optional, independent toggle alongside Super Resolution, Frame Generation / Multi Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction via the same Streamline / Unreal Engine 5 plugin path developers already use.

Visual Concepts Senior Producer Peter Kavic said the studio valued the control: “What's great is the level of control that it gives us. We can set the overall tone and style to match our existing art direction and then really get precise where it matters most, using a per pixel uplift control mask to fine tune detail on characters. Given that we want to respect their likeness with the utmost care.” In a second quote on the GeForce post, Kavic added that neural rendering “helped boost the visual quality of our materials and lighting, bringing a real jump to photorealism across the game.”

To turn it on in NBA 2K27, NVIDIA says players need the new GeForce Game Ready Driver that ships the same evening (website or NVIDIA app), then open Video Settings and enable DLSS Neural Rendering. F9 toggles it during gameplay and replays. Other DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Reflex options stay configurable as usual.

On paper, the marketing charts look wild. NVIDIA claims that with the full DLSS suite at 4K Ultra with ray tracing, a GeForce RTX 5090 can hit up to 370 FPS in NBA 2K27; at 1440p the same card is listed up to about 590 FPS, with 5080 / 5070 Ti / 5070 figures NVIDIA published for the same Ultra + ray-traced + DLSS 5 configuration. Those headline rates stack neural rendering with Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation — not neural rendering alone.

The cost of the neural stage itself is the other half of the story. Independent coverage of NVIDIA's own briefing figures — including IGN and PC Gamer — reports that turning DLSS 5 neural rendering on costs roughly 50–60% of base frame rate across RTX 50 Series cards and resolutions, which is why NVIDIA pairs it with Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation to keep displayed FPS high. A Sept. 2 Tom's Hardware look at community mod injections (not the official Streamline path) also logged large frame-rate hits — on the order of ~39–49% in its sample — and heavy power draw that pushed an RTX 5090 Founders Edition against its 575 W limit.

NVIDIA says the model is about 5× faster than the dual-5090 GTC demo from March, now running on a single RTX 50 Series GPU at up to 4K, with further Fall updates expected. For Thursday night, the shipping test is narrow and concrete: one game, one driver, RTX 50 Series (plus GeForce NOW), and a toggle that trades a chunk of raw FPS for the lighting and material look Visual Concepts signed off on.
