Xbox Cloud Gaming gets monthly hour caps in November — Ultimate 15, Premium 10, Essential 5
REDMOND, Wash. — Beginning in November, Xbox Cloud Gaming on Game Pass loses unlimited streaming and switches to monthly hour caps, Microsoft said Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, in an Xbox Wire post. Game Pass Ultimate gets 15 hours a month, Premium gets 10, and Essential gets 5. Xbox says the change should hit about 4% of Game Pass subscribers — the heavy cloud users.
“We recognize that introducing limits is a meaningful change, particularly for players who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud,” Team Xbox wrote. Today those tiers can stream without a monthly clock. Once the included hours are gone, subscribers can buy more cloud playtime in the Xbox Store. Available hours, purchasing options, and features may vary by market; Microsoft says pricing and more detail will come before the switch.
According to contemporaneous reporting from The Verge and IGN, those extra hours come in purchasable bundles that can roll over if unused — not a per-minute meter. IGN’s write-up of the Xbox announcement is blunt on that point: Microsoft is selling batches of hours that do not expire until used, not a drip “pay as you go” clock.
The same November window opens cloud streaming to people without Game Pass. Non-subscribers will be able to buy cloud playtime hours in the Xbox Store and stream eligible owned games on supported devices — pitched as occasional access for players who do not want a recurring subscription. Xbox also notes cloud can still let Xbox One owners reach eligible Series X|S titles without buying new hardware right away, especially in markets where consoles are scarce or expensive.
Microsoft’s stated reason is cost: “the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer.” Monthly caps, Xbox says, let it keep the service running while investing in reliability and performance — while admitting that for some players the practical result is a higher bill. The move lands less than a year after cloud access was opened to Premium and Essential alongside Ultimate’s long-standing unlimited stream, which is why some subscribers will read it as the familiar subscription pattern: sell the perk wide, then meter the heavy users.
In November Microsoft plans to spell out pricing, how to buy more hours, which games qualify, market availability, and how players check remaining time. It also says it will watch feedback and share any adjustments. For most Game Pass members who barely touch cloud, nothing changes. For the slice that treats the cloud as a second console — trying games before download, streaming Series titles on Xbox One, or playing on a phone away from home — November is when unlimited ends and the hour counter starts.
