NYSP investigating midair glider collision near Edinburg; sources report fatality
EDINBURG, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2026) — New York State Police are investigating a midair collision between two gliders Friday afternoon near Wheeler Road in the town of Edinburg, Saratoga County, local outlets and state police statements said.
One glider landed safely at nearby Plateau Sky Ranch Airport, and its pilot was uninjured, according to New York State Police statements relayed by NBC News and WNYT. As of Friday evening, authorities were still accounting for the second aircraft: NBC, citing Trooper Stephanie O’Neil, reported the second glider’s whereabouts were unknown and that “the investigation and search are ongoing,” with the public asked to avoid the area. WRGB / CBS 6 likewise said investigators were still searching for the second glider Friday evening after an initial call around 2:30 p.m.
Downed glider found; WNYT sources report a death
WNYT NewsChannel 13 reported that sources told the station at least one person had been found dead after the midair collision, and that reporter Lauren Holdmeyer and photojournalist Colleen Virkler located a downed glider off Wheeler Road that state police said they had been looking for. State police had not independently confirmed a fatality in the statements quoted by NBC and WRGB as of those outlets’ Friday-evening updates — Insanity Developing is attributing the death report to WNYT’s sources, not as an official confirmation.
WNYT said its newsroom was first alerted to a possible aircraft crash in Edinburg just before 3 p.m. Friday, after New York State Police posted an incident alert on Facebook. The Daily Gazette reported police and fire crews responded at about 2:26 p.m. to a two-aircraft collision report near Wheeler Road. NBC said another glider in the area reported seeing the collision, and that the crash prompted a sizable first-responder response per Saratoga County Fire and EMS radio traffic.
Witness line open
New York State Police said the investigation is ongoing and asked witnesses to call 518-457-6811, WNYT reported. Edinburg sits about 54 miles northwest of Albany near Great Sacandaga Lake.
