SAN DIEGO — Two people were killed Monday evening when a small plane crashed and burned on a runway at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa, city police and fire officials said.

San Diego Police said officers received a report of the wreck around 5:21 p.m. local time on Sept. 7, 2026. Circumstances surrounding the crash were unclear, the department said, according to reporting by the New York Post.

San Diego Fire-Rescue said roughly 30 personnel were on scene of a small plane on fire on the runway and that the airport would be temporarily closed during emergency operations. Witnesses told Fox 5 San Diego they saw the aircraft burning while working nearby, the Post reported.

Montgomery-Gibbs (IATA: MYF) is a city-owned general-aviation field about six miles north of downtown San Diego. Federal investigators typically take the lead on civil aircraft accidents; as of Monday night no NTSB public update naming the aircraft type, operator, or victims had been widely cited in initial coverage. The death toll follows a separate fatal crash near Fresno’s Sierra Sky Park over the weekend that killed a family of four.
