WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump weighed in Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, from the Oval Office on the Lindsay Clancy murder trial after a Plymouth County jury ended in a mistrial, calling the case a “horrible tragedy” and saying there will be a price to pay.

Asked whether he had been following the case, Trump said it was hard not to because it was on television so much. “Well, it’s hard not to, it’s on television so much. It’s hard not to follow it. I followed it pretty much,” he said, according to WHDH.

“It’s a shame; it’s a horrible tragedy. It’s a terrible situation. Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse. But you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price. It’s gonna be a mental institution or jail or something. But I guess they’re gonna go through another trial. It’s too bad,” Trump said, as reported by Boston 25 News and WHDH.

Earlier Friday, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial after about seven days of jury deadlock. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington won a one-hour window to seek an emergency stay from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court; that single-justice appeal was denied, clearing the way for the mistrial. Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz can retry the case and was noncommittal outside court Friday on an immediate timeline, Boston 25 reported.

Clancy is charged in the Jan. 24, 2023, deaths of her three children in Duxbury, Mass. The defense argues postpartum psychosis and that she is not criminally responsible; prosecutors say the killings were deliberate. The Oval Office comments do not change the legal posture — any retrial remains a charging decision for the district attorney.
