19-year-old dies after lightning hits shelter near Mount Timpanogos summit
AMERICAN FORK, Utah — A 19-year-old hiker died Friday, September 18, 2026, after lightning struck a small shelter near the summit of Mount Timpanogos, the Utah County Sheriff’s Office told KSL, KUTV, and FOX 13.
Around 6 a.m., nine hikers traveling in two separate groups were near the summit when stormy weather pushed them into a small metal or “tin shack” structure for shelter, Sgt. Garett Dutson said, according to KSL. Lightning hit the structure and injured multiple people. A 19-year-old man sustained critical injuries; first responders tried to help before he was pronounced dead. Dutson said the cause of death remains under investigation. Authorities did not release the man’s identity.
Rescue and other injuries
Four other hikers walked down on their own with minor injuries and were evaluated at a local hospital, Dutson told KSL. Multiple agencies assisted; the rescue took longer than usual because of active storm conditions, the sheriff’s office said. KUTV and FOX 13 matched the same timeline: hikers reached the summit, a thunderstorm moved in, they sheltered in a small structure near the top, and lightning struck that structure.
KUTV later published viewer photos of lightning near Timpanogos around 6:20 a.m. the same morning, attributed to Taylor Ehat — corroborating how quickly the storm was overhead.
NWS: tin sheds are not shelter
The sheriff’s office and local outlets relayed National Weather Service guidance: thunderstorms build fast in the mountains; if you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck; leave exposed ridges, peaks, and elevated terrain; and seek substantial, fully enclosed buildings or hard-topped vehicles. Small structures — sheds and trail shelters — do not provide adequate lightning protection, NWS warns.
A mountain summit “tin shack” is a place people run when the sky turns — and it is exactly the kind of structure weather services say can kill you if lightning finds it.
