Russia resumes deadly Kyiv strikes after Witkoff-Kushner pause; drone hits We Are Ukraine newsroom live
KYIV — Russia resumed deadly air strikes on the Ukrainian capital Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, hours after a three-day pause timed to U.S. peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner left Moscow and Kyiv — and a daytime drone punched into the headquarters of the television channel We Are Ukraine while journalists were still on air.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said five people were killed in the capital’s overnight and daytime attacks, Reuters reported. Roughly 30 were injured, fires burned across districts, and more than a dozen high-rises plus a dormitory, school, clinic, and warehouses were damaged, according to the same reporting. Ukraine’s state emergencies service told the BBC that overnight explosions alone killed three and injured 25 before the day’s toll climbed.
“Today, Russia carried out a strike on the media, journalists.”
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Shahed-class drone that hit We Are Ukraine’s building injured at least five people and partly collapsed the structure in broad daylight — “exactly when the journalists were on air,” he wrote, calling it a “new page in Russian degradation” and urging a response from Europe, the United States, and partners worldwide. The channel posted footage it said shows a deliberate newsroom hit, not an accident. Rescuers treated injured at the Solomianskyi-district site; firefighters put out the blaze.
The capital pause had been the thin diplomatic cover for weekend shuttle talks: Witkoff and Kushner met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, then Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday — their first visit to Ukraine. Both sides had agreed to halt strikes on each other’s capitals for three days. Envoys left Sunday. No major breakthrough followed. Witkoff claimed “substantive progress,” including movement toward additional trilateral talks, without publishing terms. Zelensky separately said he expects the war to continue into winter after those meetings — a continuum Insanity Developing already covered; Tuesday’s story is the strike that followed the pause, not a rehash of the winter assessment.
Ballistics, Shaheds, and the interceptor gap
Zelensky described a complex package — ballistic and cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, and Shahed-type drones — aimed, he said, at causing as much harm to life as possible. Ukraine’s military, per RFE/RL, reported dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles plus more than 160 drones in the broader assault. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed military and logistics targets; the damaged list ran through apartments, vehicles, and, by Tuesday afternoon, a working newsroom.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha urged allies to act and raise pressure on Moscow while pressing for interceptors; ballistic stocks remain critically low, a shortage Zelensky has repeatedly flagged after cruise defenses outperform ballistic ones. The EU’s Ursula von der Leyen announced fresh funding for Patriot-related purchases hours after the attack, RFE/RL reported — paper promises against overnight explosions.
Elsewhere Tuesday, officials said a passenger-train attack in southern Ukraine killed a railway worker; Sumy-route passengers had to evacuate amid the wider air war. Great-power bargaining gets the photo ops. Civilians get the metro platforms.
Putin–Trump call, same day
On Tuesday evening, Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by phone for about an hour in what Kremlin aide Yuriy Ushakov called “constructive and very frank” talks, the BBC reported, citing Moscow. The White House had no immediate public comment in that window. Diplomacy and debris landed on the same calendar.
Three quiet capital days for envoys did not rewrite the war. They paused the targeting map long enough for meetings, then the map lit back up — including a live television studio. Endless war and great-power bargaining still price out on the same invoice: apartment blocks, metro shelters, and a newsroom that was on air when the drone arrived.
