Russian drone hits Kyiv–Warsaw train ~2 km from Polish border; Poland on alert
VOLYN OBLAST, Ukraine — A Russian drone struck the locomotive of a Kyiv–Warsaw passenger train about two kilometers from the Polish border in Volyn Oblast on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026, Ukraine’s state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia said, according to POLITICO, the Kyiv Independent, and Notes from Poland.
Ukrzaliznytsia said a monitoring group warned the train crew of the threat in advance and that no passengers or staff were injured. Ukrzaliznytsia deputy director for communications Oleksandr Shevchenko was quoted by Suspilne confirming a Russian drone carried out the strike, Notes from Poland reported.
Separately, social media and local reporting showed a large fire at a gas station near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk crossing. Poland’s Border Guard told Interia a drone struck a truck about 800 meters from the Dorohusk–Jagodzin crossing. Interior ministry spokeswoman Karolina Gałecka said no injuries were reported on the Polish side; the Border Guard said traffic at the crossing was proceeding normally, Notes from Poland reported.
Poland’s armed forces operational command said it had activated defence and reconnaissance systems in response to Russia’s overnight drone attacks on Ukraine but that no violation of Polish airspace was recorded. Poland’s Government Security Center (RCB) issued air-threat alerts for counties in Lublin Voivodeship near the Ukrainian border; the Kyiv Independent said air raid warnings also sounded in neighboring Poland.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote that the border strikes were Putin’s terror “knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO,” adding: “Russian barbarians are at your gate, dear partners,” and urging allies to “throw the full weight of your sanctions at Putin’s aggressive regime” (POLITICO; Sybiha post also carried by Notes from Poland and the Kyiv Independent).
Across Ukraine, the Kyiv Independent reported that Russian attacks over the past day killed at least six civilians and injured 43, citing regional authorities, as Moscow launched a mass drone assault that heavily targeted western regions. Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched hundreds of Shahed/Gerbera drones and related munitions in the wider assault; treat nationwide casualty and launch totals as Kyiv Independent / regional-authority reporting, not independent battlefield verification.
The open record Sunday is a locomotive strike ~2 km from Poland with advance warning and no rail injuries; a separate truck/gas-station strike near Yahodyn–Dorohusk with no Polish-side injuries reported; Polish defence activation without an airspace violation; and Sybiha’s NATO/EU-door framing — not a confirmed intentional attack on Polish territory.
