WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, that Adam Telle, the current Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, will become Acting Secretary of the Army effective immediately, filling the vacancy left when Dan Driscoll’s last full day as Army secretary ended Wednesday.

“I am pleased to announce that Adam Telle, the current Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, will become Acting Secretary of the Army, effective immediately,” Trump posted on Truth Social, according to the Washington Examiner and ABC News. “He is a Great Patriot, who is respected by all. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Telle’s biography, as reported by the Examiner, includes serving as chief of staff to Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), working as Trump’s Senate liaison in the first term, and time on Senate appropriations work covering Homeland Security. He has not served in the Army; past Army secretaries have occasionally come from civilian tracks. It is not clear whether Trump will nominate him for the permanent job — Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell had been floated in some circles as a possible full-time pick after Driscoll’s resignation.

Driscoll’s exit followed widely reported friction with War Secretary Pete Hegseth, including the earlier ouster of Gen. Randy George as Army chief of staff. Gen. Christopher LaNeve has been serving as acting chief. The nation’s largest service now has an acting civilian secretary mid-Iran war, with the permanent top uniformed post still unconfirmed.
