President Donald Trump will meet New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday, the mayor’s office confirmed Sunday, putting the pair face-to-face in New York for the first time after two earlier White House sessions.

In a statement to NBC News, Mamdani’s office said the sit-down at the mayor’s official residence would focus on “issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.” The White House did not immediately comment, NBC reported. NBC New York likewise framed Monday’s visit as their first meeting in the city.

Trump is in New York for United Nations General Assembly week and is scheduled to deliver remarks Tuesday and meet global leaders, per NBC News. Monday’s Gracie stop would be at least their third public meeting: the two first met in the Oval Office in November 2025, when Mamdani was mayor-elect, then again at the White House in February.

Warm optics, sharp words

The relationship has been unusually chummy for a Trump–big-city-Democrat pairing — and still full of public digs. Before that first Oval Office sit-down, Trump called Mamdani a “communist lunatic,” then told reporters afterward he would be “cheering” for him and described him as a “very rational person,” NBC News recounted. In an April Meet the Press interview, Mamdani called the relationship “honest, direct and productive,” citing shared New York roots.

They have not stopped needling each other. Trump slammed Mamdani’s proposed pied-à-terre tax on Truth Social as “SO WRONG” and claimed the mayor was “DESTROYING New York.” Mamdani has called Trump a “despot” and “fascist” — language he stood by after the Oval Office meeting — and has blamed Trump’s war with Iran for worsening the city’s cost-of-living crunch, per the same NBC account.

After the February White House meeting, Mamdani said he raised the DHS arrest of a Columbia University student; the student was released shortly afterward, NBC reported. Monday’s agenda was not further detailed beyond city issues.
