Trump floods Truth Social with AI maps annexing Canada and Mexico, renaming New Mexico ‘New America,’ claiming the moon
BEDMINSTER, N.J. — President Donald Trump spent Labor Day weekend into Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, flooding Truth Social with roughly 40 AI-generated images over about 10 hours Sunday and more Monday — maps that paint Canada and Mexico into a stars-and-stripes United States, posts teasing a rename of New Mexico to “New America,” a claim that the moon belongs to the United States, and a run of larger-than-life propaganda, the New York Post reported from Washington.
One Monday post showed a North America map with both Canada and Mexico annexed and shaded in stars and stripes. Several others floated renaming New Mexico “New America,” with maps bearing the new label. Trump said, according to the Post’s account of the posts, that several people had suggested the change and that it was “much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State.” Newsweek and the Washington Examiner likewise described Truth Social maps crossing out “Mexico” and writing in “America,” with no executive order issued for the state.
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, pushed back on social media. “New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate—it’s been ours since before the United States existed,” she wrote, according to the Post and Newsweek. She added: “While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work.” CNN also quoted her accusing Trump of distraction and Sen. Martin Heinrich saying he would always call the Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, and New Mexico by their actual names.
That pushback sits against a real legal limit the map posts blur. Trump has used executive orders to rename the Gulf of Mexico → Gulf of America and Lake Ontario → Lake America for federal geographic naming — jabs tied to North American trade fights. A president can steer how federal maps list water bodies; renaming a U.S. state is not the same power and would have to run through the state’s own constitutional process, not a Truth Social carousel. As of Monday, no New Mexico rename order had been announced.
The same flood claimed the moon for the United States — Newsweek reported a moon image captioned “THE MOON IS OURS” — alongside Space Force–style command-console scenes. Other AI posts, per the Post, ranked Trump as the “Greatest” president above Lincoln, Washington, FDR, Jefferson, and Jackson; showed him arm-wrestling the late Hulk Hogan; depicted an Obama-facing “Snow White”–style mirror jab with the caption “Mirror, Mirror on the wall. Who’s the greatest president of them all?”; and used a Canada trade-war hockey cartoon with Trump in a USA jersey looming over fallen Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Another image placed Trump at the Resolute Desk with stock screens. “I’ve made Hundreds of Billions of Dollars on Stocks, and many other type Holdings, for the U.S.A., not myself, and all I do is get criticized by the Radical Left Dumocrats,” he wrote in the accompanying text, the Post reported. (Newsweek’s reprint of a similar stock-desk post used “Democrats” without the misspelling.)
Trump was spending the long weekend at his Bedminster, N.J., golf club and was scheduled to return to the White House Monday night. The volume is the story as much as any single frame: an elected executive treating AI meme warfare — annexation maps, state-name jokes, lunar ownership claims — as the holiday-weekend message while governors and senators answer that names and borders are not coloring-book exercises. Libertarian readers can separate the satire from the statute: federal renaming of lakes and gulfs is already contested policy; pretending a social-media map annexes neighbors or renames a state does not make it law.
