WASHINGTON — Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026, that the Trump administration “may not” reach a nuclear agreement with Iran, telling ABC’s This Week that the endgame “may be simply destroying their capabilities to do it,” The Hill reported.

“There may not be a nuclear agreement. It may be simply destroying their capabilities to do it,” Wright told host Martha Raddatz, according to The Hill. He added that a nuclear agreement with Tehran “may await a next administration.”

The comments land as the Middle East conflict enters its seventh month with no signed deal to end hostilities or curb Iran’s nuclear program. The U.S. and Israel launched the war in late February; Trump administration officials have said the goal was to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Wright said U.S. forces are “degrading their capacity to develop nuclear weapons and, ultimately, to deliver them if they develop one,” and that Washington must “destroy” those capabilities. “This is not trivial, but the United States will get the job done. And we will work in cooperation with our allies in the region,” he told Raddatz, per The Hill.

The interview followed Saturday’s U.S. Central Command strikes on three Iranian crude oil carriers after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles toward two U.S. Navy warships. Iranian state media separately claimed Sunday that IRGC forces struck an unmanned U.S. vessel in the Strait of Hormuz — a claim CENTCOM later called “a total lie,” the Washington Examiner reported, citing Capt. Tim Hawkins.

President Donald Trump on Friday called the conflict “small potatoes” for the United States and said he understood Vice President JD Vance describing it as not a war in the conventional sense. The Hill noted Trump’s framing that the fight has killed 18 U.S. service members and thousands of Iranian civilians while remaining, in his words, “not a big thing” for Washington.
