Aaron Donald ended a 2 1/2-year retirement on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, and rejoined the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams then put Donald and head coach Sean McVay in front of reporters; Donald participated in individual drills in a No. 99 practice jersey.

"To be honest with you, it was on and off for a little while, but I think I knew this decision about two weeks [ago]," Donald said, per NFL.com. "I was doing everything I needed to do to get myself some peace of mind to see if I can do it. Wasn't no rushing. Just wanted to take my time and make the decision because once you choose to come back, you're all the way back in."

On the Rams' site, Donald said: "Do I feel like I can play at a high level? Yes. Do I feel like I can still be myself? 100%. If I didn't, I wouldn't be here." He credited nearly three months of workouts, his wife Erica's green light, and the June 1 acquisition of Myles Garrett. McVay told reporters L.A. had not decided whether Donald will play the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 10 in Melbourne — the Netflix international game.

Donald, 35, is a three-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, eight-time first-team All-Pro, and 10-time Pro Bowl selection with 111 career sacks across 10 seasons, all with the Rams franchise, NFL.com summarized. He retired in early 2024. Returning delays a Hall of Fame clock that would have opened in 2029. He now lines up alongside Garrett (reigning DPOY, NFL-record 23 sacks in 2025) on a front that also includes Braden Fiske, Byron Young, Poona Ford, and Kobie Turner.

Netflix Tudum noted Tom Pelissero confirmed the return on the streamer's sports desk and reiterated the Melbourne kickoff: 8:35 p.m. ET / 5:35 p.m. PT on Sept. 10. Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium — the Rams' home field and the site of Donald's Super Bowl LVI clinch.
