Braves clinch playoff berth, beat Astros 6–2 behind Tyler Mahle
HOUSTON (Sept. 18–19, 2026) — The Atlanta Braves punched their ticket to October with a 6–2 win over the Houston Astros on Friday night at Daikin Park, clinching at least a National League wild-card berth for the eighth time in nine seasons, Reuters reported Saturday.
Deadline acquisition Tyler Mahle starred on the mound. Mahle (7–10) improved to 4–1 with a 1.28 ERA over eight starts since joining Atlanta from the Giants, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with six strikeouts across six innings.
Michael Harris II, Ronald Acuña Jr., and Matt Olson each clubbed two-run home runs. Harris followed an Olson single with an opposite-field blast off Astros starter Peter Lambert (8–10) in the fourth for a 2–0 lead — Harris finished 3-for-5 with his 26th homer. Acuña’s 19th homer in the seventh made it 4–1. Olson’s 40th of the season, also the other way in the ninth, capped the scoring.
The Braves moved to 90–64 and cut their magic number to clinch the NL East to three over the Philadelphia Phillies, who lost 6–3 to the Mets earlier Friday. Houston fell to 77–77.
Yordan Alvarez doubled and scored on an Isaac Paredes single in the fourth for Houston’s first run; Paredes added an RBI single in the eighth. Acuña later robbed Jose Altuve with a diving catch that stranded two Astros in the eighth, per Reuters.
Atlanta heads into the final stretch of the regular season already October-bound. The division race against Philadelphia is the unfinished business.
