Colts WR Keenan Allen faces minimum 3-game NFL suspension after OWI charges
INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 20, 2026) — Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen faces a minimum three-game suspension from the NFL after being formally charged with two misdemeanor offenses from his Aug. 30 downtown Indianapolis drunk-driving arrest, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Three-game suspensions are mandated by the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement for alcohol-related offenses; the CBA also allows longer bans when a player is intoxicated at higher levels, Schefter reported Sunday (~7:00 a.m. ET).
Police officers on the scene Aug. 30 said they received a .224 blood-alcohol reading from Allen — nearly three times the legal limit — meaning the NFL could decide to increase the three-game ban he already faces, ESPN reported. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by ESPN’s Stephen Holder, that BAC level triggered a more serious Class A misdemeanor charge under Indiana law.
Allen is not expected to miss playing time while the criminal case proceeds. Coach Shane Steichen said Wednesday that the Colts are allowing the legal process to play out. The NFL is expected to wait for Allen’s legal case to conclude before discipline; the next docket event, an attorney conference, is scheduled for Oct. 26, Schefter reported.
According to an Associated Press report carried by NFL.com, Allen was formally charged Tuesday with operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to 0.15 or more and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He posted $500 cash bond; attorneys waived an initial hearing that had been set for Wednesday. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said officers conducted a traffic investigation shortly after 1 a.m. Aug. 30 after seeing a vehicle park in a no-parking zone, noticed signs of intoxication when speaking with Allen, and arrested him after further investigation.
Allen, 34, joined the Colts in August on a one-year deal after more than a decade with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers. The six-time Pro Bowler had six catches for 32 yards in the Colts’ Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, ESPN reported.
League discipline after a high BAC reading is still process, not a finished sentence: CBA floors, possible lengthening for intoxication level, and a calendar that may push any suspension past this season depending on when the courts finish. Treat Schefter’s sourcing as league-source reporting; treat the .224 figure and Class A characterization as attributed to police/affidavit reporting via ESPN.
