Los Angeles Angels sold in deal expected to close early 2027 pending MLB approval
Sept. 1, 2026 — Kroenke Sports & Entertainment said Tuesday it has reached an agreement to purchase controlling ownership of the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno, ending the Moreno family's 23-year run with the club.
The companies said they expect the deal to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to approval from Major League Baseball. MLB did not immediately comment, the Associated Press reported.
"The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market," Stan Kroenke said in a statement released with the Angels. "We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization."
Moreno bought the Angels from the Walt Disney Company in 2003. The club won multiple AL West titles early in his tenure, but it has not posted a winning record since 2015. MLB.com put the Angels at 53-85 entering Tuesday, tied for the worst mark in the American League, and AP noted the franchise is on pace for its 11th straight losing season and 12th straight year without a playoff berth.
"The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE's experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise," Moreno said in the joint release.
KSE already owns the NFL's Los Angeles Rams, Premier League side Arsenal, the NBA's Denver Nuggets, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, MLS's Colorado Rapids, and the SoFi Stadium / Hollywood Park campus in Inglewood. ESPN, citing sources, reported a $4 billion valuation for the Angels sale, which would set an MLB record ahead of the Padres' earlier 2026 sale.
Moreno had publicly explored a sale in 2022 before taking the team off the market in early 2023. He said during spring training this year that he had no interest in selling at that time, according to MLB.com, making Tuesday's announcement a surprise for a club already deep into a front-office reset after firing general manager Perry Minasian and hiring John Mozeliak on an interim basis.
