NFL owners finalize four-year contract extension for Roger Goodell through 2030
NFL team owners have finalized a four-year contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell that keeps him in the job through the 2030 League season, ending March 31, 2031, the league said in a written statement Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026.
“The Compensation Committee notified the full ownership today that an agreement has been reached on a four-season contract extension for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell through the 2030 League season, ending on March 31, 2031,” the NFL said, as reported by Front Office Sports and The Guardian.
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, chairman of the owners’ compensation committee, told fellow owners in a memo obtained by Front Office Sports that the committee had reached agreement with Goodell. “Throughout the negotiation process, the Committee worked closely with an independent third-party compensation consultant and outside counsel to structure a deal that aligns Roger’s compensation with the League’s long-term interests and success,” Kraft wrote. “To that end, the agreement is heavily performance based, with more than 95% of the total compensation tied to Roger’s and the NFL’s performance measured against various metrics and at the discretion of the Compensation Committee.”
“We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years,” Kraft added.
Front Office Sports identified the other owners on the compensation committee as the Giants’ John Mara, the Jaguars’ Shad Khan, the Browns’ Jimmy Haslam, the Cardinals’ Michael Bidwill, and the Broncos’ Greg Penner.
Financial terms were not disclosed. The Guardian reported that Goodell previously earned about $63.9 million for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. The league has not been required to disclose the commissioner’s pay on an annual basis since the league office stopped operating as a tax-exempt trade association, The Guardian noted.
Fifth extension for a commissioner since 2006
The deal is Goodell’s fifth contract extension. The 67-year-old has been commissioner since succeeding Paul Tagliabue in 2006 and began his NFL career as an administrative intern in 1982 under then-commissioner Pete Rozelle, The Guardian reported.
Under Goodell’s tenure, franchise values have climbed sharply. The Washington Commanders sold for $6.05 billion in 2023, and the Seattle Seahawks sold for a record $9.612 billion this offseason, according to The Guardian. The league is also playing a record nine international games this season.
The extension’s end date lines up with the current collective bargaining agreement, which also expires in March 2031.
