Giants place Rafael Devers on 60-day IL; season ends with core surgery likely
SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants placed slugger Rafael Devers on the 60-day injured list Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026, ending his season with a core muscle injury, the Associated Press reported.
Devers, who leads the Giants with 37 home runs and 98 RBIs, is scheduled to meet Monday in Philadelphia with Dr. William Meyers. If a procedure is recommended, the operation would come Tuesday. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic noted the club took a similar approach with Matt Chapman earlier this summer and that Chapman saw the same specialist.
Manager Tony Vitello said the first baseman/designated hitter had been playing through the problem for months. “He battled with it the entire year,” Vitello said, per the AP. “I think it’s something that has bothered him for a few years now.”
The timing cut short a late power surge. Devers homered in his last two games, posted 8 home runs and 20 RBIs in his final 11 games, and hit 11 homers in his final 18, per NBC Sports Bay Area. Pavlovic also reported Devers leads the majors with 36 doubles. He had played in 309 consecutive games before sitting out San Francisco’s 7-6 win over St. Louis on Wednesday.
Devers is in the third season of a $313.5 million, 10-year contract and was acquired from Boston in June 2025. After a slow April (.207 with two homers through the month), he raised his average to .258. Career marks: .274 average and 272 home runs over 10 major league seasons.
Vitello sounded optimistic about 2027. “I think he’s pretty geeked up about next year,” the manager said. “His confidence in next year’s success gives me confidence.” To fill the roster spot, the Giants selected the contract of outfielder Scott Bandura from Triple-A Sacramento.
