SEC seeking information on Daktronics and Kawhi Leonard, CFO tells investors
BROOKINGS, S.D. — Daktronics CFO Howard Atkins told investors on the company’s earnings call that the Securities and Exchange Commission is seeking information concerning Daktronics and Kawhi Leonard, and that the company is cooperating, CBS Sports reported Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026.
Atkins’s comments, which CBS Sports said reached the public via Matt Sullivan of the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast, also confirmed NBA information requests tied to the league’s probe of Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers.
“Let me now briefly address a matter that has been in the media concerning the NBA’s investigation of Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers in connection with the league’s collective bargaining agreement that many of you may have heard about. As you might expect, we have received requests for information from the NBA,” Atkins said, per CBS Sports. “Additionally, the Securities and Exchange Commission is seeking information from us concerning the company and Mr. Leonard. We take these requests seriously and are cooperating. At this point, out of respect for the respective processes, we will not be providing further comment.”
What is — and is not — on the record
That is the official corporate line so far: information requests from the NBA and the SEC, and cooperation. Atkins did not describe SEC findings, charges, or conclusions. CBS Sports characterized the SEC inquiry as appearing to be in an early information-gathering stage and noted the agency would not be policing the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement for its own sake — leaving open why federal securities regulators are asking about the company and Leonard.
The Daktronics thread sits beside the longer NBA investigation into whether Clippers arrangements around Leonard — including a previously scrutinized Aspiration endorsement and an undisclosed Daktronics endorsement, as framed in the coverage — amounted to salary-cap circumvention. The league probe has stretched on for nearly a calendar year, CBS Sports reported.
Clippers, Leonard, and a trade on hold
Leonard remains in limbo after the Toronto Raptors put a trade with the Clippers on hold because of the ongoing investigation, according to CBS Sports. August reporting that the NBA inquiry lacked hard evidence tying Clippers owner Steve Ballmer to outright cap circumvention has not closed the file; two weeks on, CBS Sports said the league investigation remains open.
Whether SEC document requests change the NBA’s timeline is unknown. What Wednesday locked in is narrower and attributed: Daktronics told its own investors the SEC wants information about the company and Leonard, the NBA has sought information too, and the scoreboard maker says it is cooperating — without volunteering more.
Dated Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026: the federal ask is public because a CFO said it on an earnings call. The substance of what regulators find, if anything, is still offstage.
