NEW YORK — No. 8 seed Ben Shelton dismantled Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in the U.S. Open round of 16 on Arthur Ashe Stadium Sunday night, Sept. 6, 2026, earning a quarterfinal against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, per Tennis.com match data.

Shelton never faced a break point, won all 14 of his service games, and converted 4 of 6 break chances. He hit 12 aces to Tsitsipas’s 2 and won 84% of first-serve points. Tsitsipas, once ranked as high as No. 3 and now around No. 53, managed just 52% first serves in.

The win sets up an Ashe quarterfinal with Alcaraz, the No. 2 seed and 2025 champion, who earlier Sunday beat American No. 20 Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets on his return from a wrist injury. Alcaraz had said he would not come back unless he could play like himself; Paul called the Spaniard’s level “completely different.”
