U.S. women beat Spain 76–66, set FIBA World Cup final rematch with France
BERLIN — Breanna Stewart scored 16 points and Kahleah Copper added 13 as the United States beat Spain 76–66 on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, to reach the championship game of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup — a Sunday rematch with France of the one-point Paris 2024 Olympic gold-medal game the Americans won.
Associated Press (Doug Feinberg) reported the U.S. has now won 35 straight World Cup games since a 2006 semifinal loss to Russia and sits one win from a fifth consecutive tournament title, which would match the former Soviet Union for the most consecutive championships.
After cruising through earlier rounds, the Americans struggled to find offensive flow against Spain’s physical defense. The game was tied 58–58 entering the fourth before the U.S. scored 12 of the first 14 points to push ahead 70–60 with 5:20 left; Spain never got closer than eight again. The U.S. lived at the foul line, making 27 of 35 free throws, including 19 of 27 in a foul-heavy first half when America had more free-throw attempts (27) than field-goal attempts (26) and led 39–36 at the break.
Spain jumped out 9–1 early — the largest deficit the U.S. had faced in this tournament — before American reserves closed the first period with a 12–2 run. Spain will play host Germany in Sunday’s bronze-medal game.
France advanced earlier Saturday with an 86–64 win over Germany, led by Gabby Williams’ 22 points (AP / ESPN). Head-to-head history heavily favors the U.S., including the 67–66 Olympic final in Paris. Tip times and broadcast windows for Sunday’s final are set for Berlin Arena.
