PHOENIX — The New York Yankees will place outfielder Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, the team announced Friday, the New York Post, ABC7 New York, and CBS Sports reported.

Judge will be placed on the IL on Saturday, with the move expected to be made retroactive to Thursday, the Post reported. That would make him eligible as early as the regular-season finale on Sept. 27, though manager Aaron Boone declined to give a timeline or grade the strain.

“I don’t know,” Boone said Friday at Chase Field when asked about a return timeline, according to the Post.

The AL Wild Card Series begins Tuesday, Sept. 29. The Yankees have already clinched a playoff berth and trail the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, CBS Sports reported.

Second IL stint after rib return

Judge left Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins after feeling calf tightness in the field and was pinch-hit for by Heliot Ramos in the sixth inning, the Post and ABC7 reported. He had returned only seven games earlier from a three-month stay on the IL with a right rib stress fracture, the Post said.

Before exiting, Judge was still finding his timing after the long layoff, batting 4-for-23 (.174) with a .513 OPS and one home run since his Sept. 8 return, per the Post. ABC7, citing Associated Press figures, had him at 4-for-26 with 13 strikeouts in seven games back.

Boone said treatment on Thursday’s off day did not produce enough improvement, prompting tests that revealed the strain, the Post reported.

“There’s no replacing a player as great as Aaron Judge, but we have high expectations that don’t change now,” Boone said, according to the Post. “We have a lot of confidence in the people we run out there every day… and the goal doesn’t change.”

Roster shuffle down the stretch

Ramos started in right field Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks and is expected to see most of the time there, the Post reported. Max Schuemann is set to join the Yankees on Saturday to take Judge’s roster spot, per the Post. ABC7 said a corresponding roster move would be announced once Judge is officially placed on the IL.

The Yankees are also working other players back toward October, including Jazz Chisholm Jr. (right thumb sprain) and Trent Grisham (right hamstring strain), the Post reported.
