Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is putting the industry’s most contested label on OpenAI’s newest model. In a Sunday post on X that circulated into Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, Huang congratulated OpenAI on GPT‑6 Astra and wrote that “AGI has arrived” — framing artificial general intelligence as a milestone already crossed, not a future target.

That claim is Huang’s branding language, not an independently verified scientific consensus. OpenAI launched Astra on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, and describes it as the world’s “most intelligent and aligned model.” It has not issued a parallel corporate declaration that Astra is AGI. The news peg today is Huang’s social-media declaration riding the model’s first full business week.

According to reporting that quotes his X post, including Business Insider and India Today, Huang wrote:

“GPT-6 Astra, trained on ~100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72. From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years. AGI has arrived. Congratulations @OpenAI team.”

He also pointed to more Nvidia silicon ahead — “400K GPUs coming online next,” according to those same accounts of the post. The chipmaker’s CEO has floated AGI-already-here rhetoric before; Sunday’s version ties the label directly to Astra and to Nvidia’s Blackwell training footprint.

What OpenAI actually shipped

On its primary launch page, OpenAI says GPT‑6 Astra “brings together years of research and big bets across pre-training, reinforcement learning, and alignment,” and claims state-of-the-art results on computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional work. The company says Astra is rolling out first to a limited set of organizations, then over the coming days to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, plus the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman has separately pushed an “AGI era” frame around the launch. Business Insider reports he told reporters Thursday, “Welcome to the AGI era,” and that looking back, people may decide AGI was created “about this time, and I think it might be about this model.” India Today also quotes Brockman replying in the thread that the industry is “now moving into the AGI era (whether you view it as this model, the last one, or the next one).” That is still executive framing — not a NIST certificate.

OpenAI’s own working definition of AGI, often cited in coverage, is “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.” Whether any single model meets that bar depends entirely on who is holding the ruler. CEO Sam Altman has previously called AGI a “very poorly defined” and even “marketing” term in other forums; Sunday’s Huang post does not settle that definition fight.

Safety, cyber Critical, and concentrated compute

OpenAI’s safety overview for GPT‑6 Astra says Astra is the first model the company has broadly deployed that reaches the Critical level of cybersecurity capability under its Preparedness Framework — meaning, in OpenAI’s words, that with the right tools and access it can find previously unknown security flaws and develop new exploit paths across many well-protected systems without a person guiding each step. The company says it strengthened protections against harmful cyber actions, hardened internal development controls, and expanded misalignment monitoring for tool-using deployment.

That safety story sits next to a market fact Huang is happy to underline: frontier training still runs on Nvidia’s stack at enormous scale. OpenAI has previously described Nvidia as foundational to its training and inference infrastructure. When the CEO of the dominant AI-chip vendor declares AGI has arrived on the back of a customer’s model trained on ~100,000-plus Grace Blackwell systems, readers should hear both the capability claim and the sales pitch.
