Tesla stages Cybercab launch in Austin with 45 wheel-free robotaxis on Texas books
AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla stages its invitation-only Cybercab Launch Event in downtown Austin on Thursday evening, Sept. 3, 2026, putting the two-seat, steering-wheel-free robotaxi in front of invited riders and cameras. Cybercab engineer Eric Earley said on X the program starts at 5:45 p.m. ET, Reuters reported. Tesla has given few other public details beyond calling it the Cybercab launch.
Texas motor-carrier records showed Tesla with 420 autonomous vehicles authorized in the state as of Wednesday evening, including 45 Cybercabs, Reuters said — up from about 314 vehicles earlier Wednesday as Model Y robotaxi registrations climbed. Alphabet’s Waymo still leads Texas on paper with 988 registered AVs. Tesla already runs limited Robotaxi service on Model Ys in parts of Texas and Florida; some cars run with safety monitors, some without. Cybercab is the purpose-built two-seater first shown in October 2024: butterfly doors, no pedals, no wheel, built around Full Self-Driving software.
CEO Elon Musk has pitched Cybercab as eventually Tesla’s highest-volume vehicle and the backbone of a robotaxi network owners can join when they are not using the car. Production began in April 2026, Musk warned then that early output “will be very slow,” Reuters noted. Federal rules still cap how many vehicles without steering wheels and pedals a maker can sell; testing fleets are freer, but fare collection is the harder regulatory nut. California still withholds robotaxi and unsupervised driverless test permits Tesla would need for a West Coast expansion.
Wall Street is watching whether Thursday is a demo night or the start of paid Cybercab rides at scale. Morgan Stanley’s bull case, summarized by Yahoo Finance, wants unsupervised Cybercabs across Austin, Houston, and Dallas — more than a handful on the road. The bear case is retail rides for invitees and little commercial fleet. Tesla’s stock jumped about 7% into the event, CNBC said, after teaser posts of “no steering wheel, no pedals” and “try it” in Austin. The hardware is here. The question for the evening is how many of those 45 Cybercabs leave the lot as real taxis.
